Our Staff In The Spotlight: Amy

How did your childcare journey begin?

When I was growing up I was always the oldest so at family parties Id be the oldest there and my cousins would always gravitate towards me and I’d take them under my wing. I always love being the oldest and having that little bit of responsibility growing up. I’d play games with them to keep them happy. When I was in year 10 at high school, I took child development as an option and gained a GCSE in this, at grade B and I found it so interesting. When it came to the end of year 11, at just 15 years old you get asked “What do you want to do with your life?” and I couldn’t ever come up with an answer. I got 12 GSCE’s all grade C and above- so I thought ‘Sixth Form it is then’ as everyone else I knew was going. My Mom advised me to try the childcare course at college after an open evening and I was sat on the fence but after an interview with the college I completely changed my mind and took a chance at level 3 childcare. I worked so hard (whilst also working part time at our local theme park) and qualified in 2015 with a B (A level equivalent). I went straight into a nursery role which unfortunately I did not enjoy and only stayed for 6 months, before taking a year away from childcare to work at my part time job, full time. One shift at work I helped a child who was lost, kept him calm and distracted him whilst working with the security team to get him back to his family. One of my co-workers turned to me and said, “that was fantastic, why did you ever leave childcare?” and that is what inspired me to find a nursery nurse job in January 2017.

How long have you worked at Banana Moon Kingsbury?

I have worked at Banana Moon Kingsbury for 6 years. I started in February 2017 and it is like my second home!

What is your favourite thing about your job?

That no two days are the same. Everyday is different and you never know what is going to happen. The children and families I have worked with over the years have been fantastic and I couldn’t wish for better colleagues.

Who inspired you to go into childcare?

My year 10, child development teacher, Mrs Richardson. She was such a clever lady with so much passion. Unfortunately, she passed away a few years but I always think about her and the impression she left with me.

What is your proudest moment in your career?

Becoming manager (and also getting our GOOD grading from Ofsted). I've reflected back on when I first started 6 years ago and 19 year old me would never of even thought she would be in a management position. I've now been manager for nearly 2 years and who knows what is next!!

What is your favourite children’s book?

Room on the broom!- No questions asked!!

What is your favourite nursery rhyme?

Tiny Turtle- so much fun to be had with this song!!!!
